The Fairy Hoax (Revised)

A tribute to Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, who went to great lengths to fabricate realistic and convincing evidence of the fairies at the bottom of their garden.

The Inspiration

  • 1917 Cottingley Hoax
This blog is my modern day tribute to their Fairy Hoax; my own evidence of fairies existing at the bottom of my garden. Except I didn’t bother to make mine convincing whatsoever. The effort would have been wasted.
Due to the wonders of technology, the photograph is no longer documentation. It is merely an image. Over and above this is the increased scepticism of the average person. Between the room for deception the internet, our favourite source of information; unashamed politicians and presidents being exposed as liars and charlatans with little to no consequence; tabloid newspapers and magazines reporting unfounded and dubious news for public entertainment… Nothing is to be believed. Somehow this is not a big deal though. Instead of demanding the truth and scrutinising everything we are told more than before, we neither accept nor deny anything to the point that everything we see and hear, whether witnessed first or second hand, is filed away in that grey area between factual and fictional. Soon it’ll all be the same. And nobody will care anymore, because as time goes on it’s becoming more and more obvious that the concept of truth is an abstract one and that scrutinising and contesting a claim is a lot more effort than it is actually worth.
